Itinerary:
Your adventure begins in Cusco, with our team picking you up from your hotel at around 5 AM. You’ll then head to Ollantaytambo station for a short, scenic 1-hour drive to Km 104, where the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu begins.
The hike will take you to Wiñay Wayna, a fascinating Inca site located at 2,680 meters (8,790 feet) above sea level. The hike to Wiñay Wayna will take approximately 4 hours. This stunning archaeological site, located on a steep mountainside, is known as “Machu Picchu’s sister” due to its size and grandeur, even though only a small portion of it has been discovered.
After exploring Wiñay Wayna and marveling at its beauty, you’ll continue to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, where you’ll catch your first glimpse of the legendary Machu Picchu citadel. From here, you’ll take a different route, descending to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll spend the night at your hotel. The next day, after recharging your energy, you’ll explore the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas.
Recommendations:
- We recommend scheduling this activity with as much time as possible and leaving it for the last days of your itinerary. This will allow your body to acclimatize better, as the physical effort is considerable.
- Don’t forget to bring cash for entrance fees and additional expenses.
- Make sure to carry water and snacks for the hike.
- Dress in layers to better adapt to the ever-changing mountain climate.
- Wear proper hiking shoes for comfort and safety.
- Your backpack should not exceed 8 kilograms in weight.
