Choquequirao 5 Days: The Mystical Inca Path Few Have Seen

Dare to discover Choquequirao: the Inca citadel hidden among the clouds, a silent witness to a magnificent past. On this 5-day, 4-night Choquequirao trek, we invite you to walk ancestral trails, cross deep valleys and immerse yourself in a landscape of untouched nature. There are no crowds here; just you, the mountain and the echoes of the empire that once ruled the Andes.

As an agency with over 10 years of experience in Peru's tourism industry, we designed this journey for those seeking far more than a simple outing: our goal is to turn the trip into an experience of connection, shared effort and true discovery. With expert local guides, careful logistics and a passion for Inca culture, we will guide you every step of the way so you can experience Choquequirao safely, with excitement and with respect.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco → Cachora → Capuliyoc → Chiquisca / Playa Rosalina

We set off early from Cusco to Cachora in private transport. From the trailhead at Capuliyoc (roughly between 2 900 and 3 200 m), we begin the descent toward the bottom of the Apurímac River canyon. We will camp in the Playa Rosalina / Chiquisca area, surrounded by the deep landscape of the valley.

Day 2: Playa Rosalina → Marampata

Today we climb out of the valley, tackling demanding stretches until we reach Marampata. Along the way you will pass through high jungle and cloud forest, admiring the Andean flora and, with luck, spotting condors soaring over the canyon.

Day 3: Marampata → Choquequirao (full day of exploration)

We will spend the day exploring the Inca ruins of Choquequirao, from the “Hanan” and “Urin” sectors to agricultural terraces, canals and temples. Here we discover why it is known as the “lost city of the Incas” and explore less-visited corners with your expert guide.

Day 4: Choquequirao → Santa Rosa → Rosalina / Chiquisca

We begin the return by descending toward Santa Rosa and Playa Rosalina, then continue on to Chiquisca for our second night of camping. It is a transition day, with time to reflect on everything you have experienced.

Day 5: Chiquisca → Capuliyoc → Cachora → Cusco

The final day involves a demanding climb back up to Capuliyoc, where our transport will take us back to Cusco. We will arrive in the afternoon, our hearts full of landscapes, history and satisfaction.

General Information

What is Choquequirao?

Choquequirao is a vast archaeological complex located in the Cusco region, on the edge of the department and within the Choquequirao Regional Conservation Area. Set between 2 800 and 3 050 meters above sea level, it overlooks the Apurímac River canyon and spreads across Inca terraces, plazas, ceremonial buildings and hydraulic systems.

This site was probably one of the last strongholds of the Inca Empire after the fall of Cusco, serving as a strategic refuge, a ritual center and a link between the Andes and the jungle. Although it covers some 1 800 hectares, only 30–40 % of its area has been excavated to date, which gives it an aura of mystery and great archaeological potential. The Choquequirao tourism project even includes plans for a cable car that would connect the citadel with areas of Cusco and Apurímac in under 15 minutes, although it has not yet materialized.

Choosing this route means stepping away from conventional tourism, experiencing adventure in Cusco in its purest form and connecting with the mountains as few people ever have.
