Humantay lake the Turquoise Treasure of the Andes

Next to the majestic snow-capped peak known as “Salkantay” (at 6,264 meters above sea level), whose Quechua name translates to “the indomitable,” stands the impressive Humantay Glacier, rising over 5,450 meters above sea level. At its foothills, fed by the meltwater from these giants, lies the magical Humantay Lake, located at an altitude of over 4,200 meters above sea level.

What is Humantay Lake?

Humantay Lake is one of the most extraordinary sights in the region. It is characterized by its unique turquoise color, which contrasts beautifully with the high Andean landscape. At this altitude, the climate is quite cold, and the ecosystem and geology are one-of-a-kind, featuring towering mountains and vast plains of native grass and trees. This location is home to a flora and fauna that can only be observed here, offering a pure breath of the mountains’ essence.
